Flood of Filth Turns Facebook News Feeds Into Open Sewers

Many Facebook users have complained recently about a spam flood of a most unsavory nature. Some say pornographic images and images depicting extreme violence — sometimes both — are showing up in their News Feeds without their consent. Others say their accounts are being used to send friends links to explicit videos and other messages.

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

A leaked early version of RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won’t get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer — only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that’s really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There’s no guarantee this app hasn’t been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers — Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista… what’s with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It’s also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9′s Windows 7 integration features — like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft’s IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?

Intel 4004, world’s first commercial microprocessor, celebrates 40th birthday, ages gracefully

Pull out the candles and champagne, because the Intel 4004 is celebrating a major birthday today — the big four-oh. That’s right, it’s been exactly four decades since Intel unveiled the world’s first commercially available CPU, with an Electronic News ad that ran on November 15th, 1971. It all began in 1969, when Japan’s Nippon Calculating Machine Corporation asked Intel to create 12 chips for its Busicom 141-PF calculator. With that assignment, engineers Federico Faggin, Ted Hoff and Stanley Mazor set about designing what would prove to be a groundbreaking innovation — a 4-bit, 16-pin microprocessor with a full 2,300 MOS transistors, and about 740kHZ of horsepower. The 4004′s ten micron feature size may seem gargantuan by contemporary standards, but at the time, it was rather remarkable — especially considering that the processor was constructed from a single piece of silicon. In fact, Faggin was so proud of his creation that he decided to initial its design with “FF,” in appropriate recognition of a true work of art. Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft’s slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what’s new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft’s official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn’t resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that’s something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.
